Logo for El Puente Puerto Rico featuring a swirling orange and red sun design above the text "EL PUENTE PUERTO RICO."

In 2013, El Puente held the first Climate Change Leadership Summit in Puerto Rico, leading to the creation of the Enlace Latino de Acción Climática (ELAC) and the signing of 5 Executive Orders by the Governor on climate issues. Now known as El Puente Puerto Rico (EPPR), the program connects social struggles of Puerto Rican communities both on the island and in the diaspora. The organization has led initiatives like climate marches, environmental education programs, and disaster relief efforts, including solar energy projects after hurricanes and earthquakes. El Puente-PR fosters leadership, sustainability, and justice through grassroots collaboration and innovative solutions.

Our work in Puerto Rico focuses on 3 main areas

  • Group of children and adults gardening in an urban garden setting.

    Climate Education and Youth Development

We collaborate with school communities to integrate climate education into the curriculum through a comprehensive model that promotes action in public policy, school facilities, governance, culture, climate adaptation, well-being, and teaching, engaging the entire school community.

  • A group of people sitting in a semi-circle under a covered outdoor area. A man and woman are standing in front of the group, presenting with a board and visual aids. The setting is casual and surrounded by greenery, with a residential area visible in the background.

Community Adaptation and Preparedness for Emergencies and Disasters

Community meetings, training and environmental justice education, knowledge exchange, and the work at our Centro as a physical place to test and learn from climate change adaptation models, and community-led capacity building activities.

  • People holding a green banner that requests climate justice and fair transitions, with police officers in the background.

    Public Policy and Environmental Advocacy

Legal actions against the state and private companies that violate federal and state environmental laws and regulations; citizen training workshops on advocacy issues; and educational campaigns to combat misinformation, lack of transparency and corruption.
