FEDERICO CINTRÓN MOSCOSO, DIRECTOR, EL PUENTE PUERTO RICO

“The purchase of this building is a testament to our commitment to the Río Piedras community and the continuation of our work for climate justice in Puerto Rico. Our team has a long-standing relationship with Río Piedras. We want to contribute to the permanence and sustainable development of the area, as well as serve as a hub for sharing community experiences and knowledge for action and climate adaptation.”

Founded in 1982 in Brooklyn, NY, El Puente emerged as a grassroots movement to combat youth violence through holistic leadership and community development. Over the decades, it has grown into a powerful human rights institution, serving thousands of individuals annually with programs that champion peace, justice, and self-determination.

El Puente expanded to Puerto Rico in 2013 with the establishment of El Puente-Enlace Latino de Acción Climática (ELAC). Since then, El Puente Puerto Rico has become a vital force for climate justice on the island, addressing systemic inequalities while empowering local communities to lead the fight for resilience and sustainability.

Río Piedras, once a vibrant hub of cultural and economic activity, has faced dcades of disinvestment. Despite its challenges, Río Piedras remains an essential location for networking, mobilizing, and building community due to its proximity to the University of Puerto Rico. By securing 54 Calle Robles, El Puente Puerto Rico is taking a stand against displacement and gentrification, ensuring that Puerto Ricans themselves own and shape the future of this space.

Our Work: A Decade of Impact

Since its inception, El Puente Puerto Rico has:

  • Led the annual Caminata ante el Cambio Climático, gathering thousands to demand climate justice.

  • Organized climate leadership summits and educational workshops, engaging communities across the island.

  • Partnered with regional leaders to advance climate adaptation, strengthen energy systems, and enhance disaster preparedness.

A Vision for Transformation

The Environmental and Climate Justice Hub will be a dynamic, 9,000+ square foot space designed to:

  • Address urgent issues like power outages, energy insecurity, and tropical storms.

  • Serve as a resource center for local leaders, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing.

  • Provide spaces for education, research, and community-driven solutions to climate challenges.

  • Promote a vision of the world that prioritizes care for others, care for the environment, and care for oneself.
